We so often hide from God- In fact, it was our first reaction once we knew that we (adam and eve) had sinned.
Hebrews 4:13 says; “nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Every thing is naked and exposed before his eyes and He is the one to whom we are accountable.”-
So, God see’s EVERYTHING? Yup. Even though I know this word to be true- I still hide when I know that I have fallen short of God’s glory. Thankfully it doesn’t end there. God does provide a way-
verse 14-16 continues; So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. (this is the best part) SO- let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
I recently heard Matt Carter explain the difference between Mercy and Grace- Mercy is not getting something that you deserve. Grace is getting something that you don’t deserve. And when we run to our heavenly father- we receive both. But there in lies the challenge, this is not always our response to temptation. Actually, I believe it seldom is. I think this is in part due to our understanding of mercy and grace. If we take a little bit of time and think about what our lives would be like without God’s grace and mercy- or better yet, how God has been gracious and merciful to each of us, I believe we will want to experience mercy and grace, especially in our time of need.
So, That shame that we feel- not from God. That guilt that we feel- not from God. Yes he convicts us by His word and His spirit, but it is accompanied by mercy and grace.
God, thank you for always meeting us where we are at. And being so gracious to us when we hide from you, and pretend that You (the God of the universe who knows the hairs on our little heads) can’t see us. Help us to run to you first, Lord!
